3.1 University Strategy

The Board of Governors adopted a new Strategy, Twenty-Twenty Vision at its meeting on 5 March 2013. View vision here.

Implementation of the Strategy is overseen by the Strategy, Risk and Projects Group (StRAP) which comprises members of the Chief Executive’s Team, Directors and Heads of Professional Services and three representatives of the Heads of Academic Departments. Reports on progress are presented to the Academic Board and the Board of Governors twice a year.

3.2  Corporate and business plans                       

Following approval of the Strategy, an Implementation Plan for each year will be developed to address how we are doing.

The University has adopted a number of strategies to support the delivery of its core functions and its strategic objectives. These include:

3.4 Academic quality and standards

The University’s academic provision is governed by the Academic Regulations as approved by the Academic Board.

3.5 Vice-Chancellor’s Annual Report on Teaching and Research

The Board of Governors and the Academic Board meet annually to consider a reflection on the operation of the University’s Taught Degree Awarding Powers. An annual report, prepared by the Vice-Chancellor, summarises both taught and research provision with reference to any external audits or reviews. 3.6 Corporate relations

In terms of corporate relations we have three key priorities:

  • Business, management and leadership provision to support businesses and develop their expertise through the extension of bespoke work-based courses, research and consultancy and Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
  • New business generation, stimulated by the encouragement of enterprise and the nurturing of new start-ups, through a phased, progressive multi-location business-incubator system. These new businesses will be largely generated by university-led activity. This includes the development of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) with local businesses and university-wide enterprise education to support faculties in the generation and development of new business ideas.
  • Employment Support for businesses and graduates through the expansion of student and graduate placement services, with mentoring and coaching support.

The university runs many schemes that student and businesses can benefit from including:

  • The Day Release Degree: This provides a flexible way for students to gain a full honours degree in Business Studies, whilst in employment.
  • Work Experience programmes: Our Business and Management degrees have a strong vocational focus and are enhanced by our optional work placement programmes.
  • Internships: Our placements office can help businesses of all sizes by advertising 1 Year Internship opportunities to our Undergraduate Students looking for a Year 3 placement. 
  • Apprenticeship Scheme: offers paid employment through the National Apprenticeship Service in a learning partnership with Chichester College.
  • Businesses we have strong relationships with include West Sussex County Council, Chichester District Council, Butlins and St Richards Hospital 

3.7 Government and regulatory reports

The University's activities are subject to review and inspection by a number of regulatory bodies. These include:

The Higher Education Funding Council for England

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is a regulatory body for institutions' financial arrangements and is also the Charity Regulator for those higher education institutions that are exempt charities.  HEFCE conducts a five year review of institutional arrangements in relation to strategic and financial management and governance arrangements.  The most recent review of December 2013 concluded with some suggestions to enhance governance but made no formal recommendations. The Care Quality Commission

The most recent Institutional Review was conducted in January and March 2012; the report is publicly available on the Agency’s website

The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)

The University of Chichester is a Category ‘A’ Provider for Initial Teacher Education.

Research Degrees

The University offers research degrees under its own Research Degree Awarding Powers conferred by the Privy Council in 2014, and an Accreditation Agreement with the University of Southampton. In accordance with the Agreement, the University of Chichester submits a Postgraduate Research Enhancement Review and Action Plan (PRERAP) report annually. The Report for 2012-13 was approved by the Academic Board in March 2014.

3.8 The Equality Act 2010

The University’s Equality and Diversity Policies set out our commitment to embed the principles of equality and diversity across our operation, recognising the importance that students, staff and visitors are treated fairly and with respect. The Policies also seek to establish where responsibility for addressing equality lies.
