5.7 Code of Conduct for Members of governing bodies

The Board of Governors has adopted the Governance Code of Practice from issued by the Committee of University Chairs (CUC) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). This requires the publication of a Statement of Primary Responsibilities.

In 2010, the Board of Governors formally adopted an additional Code of Conduct which describes explicitly the Seven Principles of Public Life, established by the Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life. A copy of the model Code of Conduct for members of the Board of Governors must be signed by all members on appointment.

5.8 Equality and Diversity

As a public body, the University of Chichester has a duty to promote equality and diversity. The Equality and Diversity Policy was updated in 2010.

The University of Chichester places great importance on equality of opportunity for all – students, staff, visitors, governors. The Equality and Diversity Committee is chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ian Child, and membership includes a Governor member as well as staff and students.

The Committee prepares an Annual Report for each academic year and this is discussed by the Academic Board en route to the Board of Governors who must agree the report before it is published.

Annual Reports

Health, Safety and Sustainability come under the remit of the Director of Human Resources.

5.9 Health, Safety and Sustainability

The Board of Governors is responsible for the Health and Safety of students, staff and visitors to the University. The Health and Safety Policy sets out the responsibility levels for Health and Safety of the Board and its members, senior staff, line managers and individuals.

The Governors’ Strategy and Resources Committee monitors the implementation of agreed action plans to improve health and safety arrangements. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ian Child, chairs the University’s Health and Safety Committee which meets three times a year.

The Committee prepares an Annual Report for each academic year for presentation to the Board of Governors.

It is also presented to the Academic Board and the Strategy, Risk and Projects Group. 

Periodic reports are received by the Governors’ Strategy and Resources Committee and the Board of Governors.
