Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice: School Business Managers

The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice, worth 60 Level 7 Masters Credits (one third of a Masters Degree), has been designed for individuals or groups of students who wish to develop their professional expertise by undertaking and reflecting upon small scale research with the workplace setting.

Course content

This module has been specifically prepared to respond to the needs of School Business Managers (SBM) and those holding equivalent roles who, challenged to respond to the increasing focus placed on business practice in an educational context, wish to further develop their professional expertise and gain academic credit.

Facilitated by a team of lecturers who each have practical experience working within the administration context of schools, academies and further education colleges, and who bring with them expertise in human resource management, operational management, information technology, marketing and financial management, this module aims to:

  • Prepare students for learning at a postgraduate level and a critical examination of the context and practices with which the SBM has involvement;
  • Examine the usefulness of theoretical models to successful delivery of the SBM role by encouraging reflective learning and an analytical examination of school business management related activities;
  • Develop familiarity with undertaking research related to SBM responsibilities in order to inform and enhance delivery of the professional role and thus the contribution to school performance

The programme is based at our Bognor Regis campus. You will also have the opportunity to study by Distance Learning, accessing resources from our Moodle (VLE) platform, from which you will be supported by a dedicated tutor team based at our Bognor Regis campus.

The University resources provide the best facilities available for your study.  We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At the Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support.  We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. 

A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. 

We use an electronic learning environment with a continually expanding portfolio of online library resources that are available from anywhere at any time.

Our brand new award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus. 

It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors. 

Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, a coffee lounge and over 80 open access work stations. 

An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

The campus offers purpose built classrooms, as well as lecture and seminar rooms.

Successful students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice, which can act as a springboard for further Masters study.

Teaching and assessment

Delivery takes the form of taught and facilitated sessions plus 1-2-1 input arranged at approximately month-6 weekly intervals over either 7 months (November start) or 1 year (February start). 

Sessions take place at our Bognor Regis campus but, subject to group numbers, can also be delivered off site.
