ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must have a suitable honours degree (2:2 or above);

All applicants must have GCSE passes in English, Mathematics and Science at grade C / 4 or above (or equivalent). We will consider applicants who are taking the relevant GCSE(s) whilst applying;

Your personal statement is important; it should convince us that you are serious about teaching as a career.

Reference to any experience you have of observation or working in a primary school. All applicants will be required to demonstrate awareness of professional requirements within schools and an awareness of the education sector.

GCSE Equivalency: We would normally expect applicants to have taken and passed the full GCSE course  however in some circumstances we do accept equivalent qualifications or equivalency tests. The PGCE training that I received at Chichester was magnificent preparation for life in the classroom. The whole school sessions equipped us well on a range of pedagogical and whole school issues, from questioning and AfL through to a range of pastoral issues often faced in schools. It was an excellent way to interact with students from other subject areas and see the importance of a holistic approach to education… The training at Chichester has served me well into my (still new) teaching career where I am now a Head of House. That being said, I still do and will always hold Chichester close to my heart and think back with fond memories of a year well invested!

Course content

It is a full-time programme that runs over one year. We also offer a specialist route in Modern Languages which qualifies you to teach all subjects to pupils aged 5-11 but includes modules allowing you to specialise in teaching a foreign language – French or Spanish.

The programme is taught at master’s level and allows students to gain up to 60 credits towards a master’s qualification. The course enables you to develop your skills of critical analysis and engage with educational research at the same time as developing practical classroom skills through school experience. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped as reflective practitioners to continue your professional learning throughout your career.

Our facilities

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support.  We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.  We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.

Our award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus.  It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors.  Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, Costa Coffee and over 80 open access work stations.  An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

Work placements

School Experience

The PGCE programme is taught in affiliation with a range of primary schools. During the programme, you’ll be placed in two different schools for extended placements. Plus you’ll have three two-week group placements focusing on the teaching of maths, English or teaching pupils with Special Educational Needs.

The school experiences will draw on your own prior experiences and skills and develop them within the partnership of school-based and university-based training and support. During School Experience, school-based mentors are partners in identifying individual training needs and refining your individual action plans. Initially, you’ll focus on teaching small groups of pupils the core curriculum subjects, leading to proficiency in teaching a whole class subjects across the primary curriculum by the end of the second placement.

You’ll develop a broader understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in education and the wider context within which schools operate. You’ll also be able to identify areas for future development during your own teaching career.

Indicative modules

The university-based study is divided into three key areas which will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to plan and manage creative and effective lessons while ensuring that pupils of all abilities are motivated to learn. These key areas are:

  • Core Curriculum
  • Wider Curriculum
  • Professional Studies

Core Curriculum Studies

The Core Curriculum module develops student teachers’ enthusiasm for and enjoyment of English, Mathematics and Science. Through separate subject strands this course will develop student teacher subject, curriculum and pedagogical knowledge in each subject.

It will equip student teachers to take a critical and reflective view of each subject’s curriculum and associated learning and teaching methodologies. Student teachers will begin to develop a critical understanding of the distinctive features of each subject area and the research concerning children’s learning in that subject.

By linking their learning to their school experience, it aims to promote the necessary competencies and understanding student teachers need to plan, teach and assess the core curriculum well.

Foundation Curriculum Studies (e.g. History, PE, ICT, MFL etc.)

This module aims to develop student teachers’ critical understanding of and enthusiasm for the primary curriculum and associated pedagogies. Students will develop a systematic knowledge and understanding of key curriculum and framework documents and a critical awareness of current issues and debates surrounding the primary curriculum.

The module will support students in analysing and reflecting critically on their previous experience, attitudes and assumptions about the curriculum. It will consider the distinctive challenges, concerns or pedagogy associated with particular curriculum subjects and also common issues, e.g. the development of creativity. It will prepare students to plan, teach and assess effectively the foundation subjects and to develop cross-curricular approaches to teaching and learning.

Professional Studies

This module aims to develop student teachers’ critical and rigorous understanding of the principles which underpin primary education. It will develop student teachers’ knowledge and understanding of the nature of the primary curriculum and children’s developmental needs.  It will introduce and critique educational research methodology, analysis and ethics. It will advance their abilities to critically apply such knowledge and understanding in a professional context through lesson planning, teaching, assessment and behaviour management and critical reflection on these.

A particular focus will be on issues of inclusion, equality and diversity and the module will develop student teachers’ abilities to be able to apply their knowledge and understanding of such issues in the classroom. The module aims to enable student teachers to begin to develop their own personal educational philosophies, so that they can apply these in the classroom and articulate them to other professionals.​

Teaching and assessment

The programme’s taught by experienced and enthusiastic tutors, in partnership with mentors and teachers in local schools. It lasts 39 weeks and you’ll spend at least 24 weeks of this on placement in schools.

As a University of Chichester student you will be provided with many things to support you but there may be additional costs which you may encounter whilst studying. The information below will help you understand our provision and what else you need to budget for.

What you can expect from us

All of your teaching and assessments are included in your tuition fees, including, lectures/guest lectures and tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions and specialist teaching facilities. You will also have access to a wide range of support and services:

Materials for laboratory and field-based teaching activity;
A range of student services – advisors, help desks, counsellors, placement support and careers service;
The general Library services are free for students and our e-resources are available wherever you are. However, you may become liable for fines if you don't return items on time;
Open access IT spaces, wi-fi across the campuses and in the halls of residence, AV equipment to borrow;
Access to support from our Careers Service;
Disability and additional learning support;
The Language Centre to help you develop/improve foreign or English language skills;
24 hours a day security team.

Costs of living and other expenses you may need to consider:

Accommodation and living costs;
Text books (but do remember that our library is stocked with a large range of text books for all courses, as well as online resources such as industry journals, free of charge);
General stationery and other supplies such as presentation materials;
Photocopying and printing (note: a hard copy of each assessment to be submitted is required);
The library is charged for the Inter Library Loans service - we pass this cost on directly to our customers;
Travel to, from and between campuses (note that the U7 and Number 50 bus services offer a subsided travel rate); 
Gym membership: check out our student membership packages, sports events, varsity teams, information about our new facilities and more on the Sport webpages;
Dance / Theatre passes – these provide discounted entry to a range of performances;
Field Trips / Educational Visits – these are optional and do not have to be undertaken to complete the programme. Students make a contribution towards the cost (e.g. travel, sometimes accommodation);
If you require a Diagnostic Assessment for a Specific Learning Difficulty such as Dyslexia, the University may be able to assist you arrange this. You will be required to pay for this assessment, although some financial assistance may be possible from the University Hardship Fund. Graduation: It is free for the student to attend the ceremony itself. Graduands must wear academic dress. Academic dress, guest tickets and photography are additional costs payable by the student.

Financial help available from the University

We offer a number of scholarships and bursaries to students who are beginning their studies at Chichester, including an Alumni bursary of £1,000 on all PGCE and School's Direct routes at Chichester. Our Finance pages provides details on living costs, budgeting and paying your tuition fees.

DBS check

PGCE applicants are required to have an enhanced Disclosure Barring Service check which needs to be paid for before the start of the course.

Costs incurred during School Experience

Over the duration of your course you will spend 24  weeks on placement. These school experiences are organised  in our partnership schools which extend across East and West Sussex, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and into Surrey. Travel to placements, which  can be by car or public transport, varies but your commute will not usually  exceed 1 Hour from your term time address to the placement school (assuming your term time address is within our partnership area). 

Students not in receipt of a government bursary may receive a contribution towards travel costs depending upon the distance.

 Whilst on School Experience appropriate professional dress will be required.

 Students may wish to purchase a laptop/tablet to use whilst on school experience as schools are not required to provide these.
