David Gaylard

About

David has been a graduate practitioner since 1989 with a diverse social work background.

His wide-ranging employment experiences include generic social work in Hertfordshire, adult mental health work as an Approved Social Worker with the London Borough of Wandsworth, employment  as senior care coordinator with a London based private provider for people with complex mental health and learning difficulties, hospital social work with Kensington and Chelsea Social Services and employment as a senior practitioner with Chichester Adult Community Team, West Sussex County Council. Prior to joining the University of Chichester in 2006, David was a social work team manager (Older Persons’ Team) with Portsmouth City Council. In addition to his social work training, David also trained and worked in the NHS as a registered general nurse (RGN) at St George’s Hospital, London.

David holds a Practice Teachers Award from Goldsmith’s College, University of London having supervised a variety of MA students. In 2008, David gained an MA in Management (Health & Social Care Services) from the University of Chichester and in 2013, obtained an MA in Social Work Research & Evaluation (University of Sussex). David is currently undertaking a doctoral research thesis on personalisation under austerity.

Since 2016 David has been an external examiner for Lincoln University BSc (Hons) Social Work programme and remains registered with Social Work England. David previously sat on the Research Ethics Committee for the past four years.

David’s research and writing interests include personalisation, adult safeguarding, collaborative working in relation to adult services, diversity themes and mental illness so teaches across all our undergraduate, postgraduate and WSCC collaborative (post-qualifying) ASYE Adult Services programmes.

When not working, David enjoys politics, independent travel, swimming, music festivals, theatre and cinema.

David was also nominated for lecturer of the year by the SU Teaching Awards 2016/17.
