Dr Paul Wheeler
Programme Leader for Sport Management (Business)
About
Paul is a Senior Lecturer and the Programme Coordinator for the BA (Hons) Sport Management (Business) degree.
His research expertise is the history of sport: his doctorate critically analysed the evolution of Golf Tourism on the South Coast of England from 1880-1939. Paul is part of various sports history-related research projects, independently and in collaboration with colleagues within this university, other universities and non-academics.
As the coordinator for the Sport Management degree, his duties include the recruitment, management and monitoring of students on the degree, together with the mentoring of his academic advisees. In 2020 he was heavily involved with the revalidation of the degree and Paul also led on the attainment of degree endorsement by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
In addition to his academic duties, Paul also oversees the timetable coordination for two areas within the Institute. His role is to ensure that the teaching spaces, patterns and staffing details that are required to deliver the teaching across several undergraduate programmes are identified and secured. This requires constant liaison between the teaching staff and the central timetabling team.
Finally, Paul liaises with community groups and local partnerships to provide them with expert sport management advice that will assist them in the operation and organisation of projects and facilities.

My research interests focus primarily on modern sports history, primarily, but not only golf. I am particularly interested in examining accounts of local history sporting narratives.
